Millions of dollars approved for Osceola affordable housing
Osceola County Commissioners have unanimously approved nearly $30 million for the construction of 500 affordable housing units across the county. They’ll span from Buenaventura Lakes to the Poinciana SunRail station to the west of U.S. 192. District One commissioner, Peggy Choudhry, says the county has incentives in place to attract developers, with conditions. “If investors want to do this, we want to be sure that it’s the housing we’re looking for and also obviously affordable housing,” Choudhry said. Nearly $4 million is being allocated to help fund “Buen Vecino”, a 60-unit development that will be built on Competition Drive for the low-income older population in partnership with the Osceola Council on Aging. “We also have programs where we collaborate and work with our nonprofits that are getting grants or opportunities to build affordable housing, whether it’s for seniors or certain families,” Choudhry said. In partnership with Park Place, about $2 million from the county will be helping build an additional 30 units at Dillingham Apartments near downtown Kissimmee.Nearly $3 million will be going toward 80 new units in the Cameron Preserve complex on 192.Just less than $15 million will be going toward the construction of 354 units at Falcon Trace near the Poinciana SunRail Station. “Any way, shape or form that we can bring housing, we’re going to do it,” Choudhry said. Timelines vary for when the properties will be ready. Commissioners say they already have plans for more in the works.
